Additional Information
What methods does Level A use for utility designating?
We use electromagnetic (EM) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect and locate underground utilities, voids, and other subsurface features without disturbing the surface. Using both methods together lets us cover a wider range of utility types and site conditions than either one alone.
How is this different from calling 811 for a public utility markout?
State one-call programs (811) mark the public utility owners’ facilities to the extent of their records — often only to the meter or property line. Our private designating covers what one-call doesn’t: private-side lines, on-campus and in-plant networks, and unmarked or abandoned lines, and it produces a mapped deliverable rather than paint alone.
What do you mark on site, and what do we receive when the work is done?
We mark all located utilities with clear, color-coded paint and flags following industry-standard practice. Along with the on-site markout, you’ll receive a PDF and KML of the mapped utilities for your project files (a DXF is available on request for CAD import).
How far in advance should we schedule a locate?
There’s no fixed lead time — for planned projects, schedule as early as you can so we can coordinate site access and scope. If you need locating on short notice, call us directly and we’ll do everything we can to accommodate an urgent timeline.
How accurate is this, and are there limitations we should know about?
Our designating is Quality Level B (QL-B) data, consistent with ASCE 38 — locating and mapping utilities from the surface without physically exposing them. That makes it reliable for planning, design, and avoidance, but it isn’t a substitute for a physically confirmed location. Before excavating directly over or near a marked utility, we recommend confirming its exact position and depth with a vacuum-excavated test hole (Quality Level A data).
